The fort is named after the Portuguese word for water, “agua,” and it once served as a source of freshwater for sailors to replenish their supplies. In actuality, it was one of Asia’s largest freshwater reservoirs and has the capacity to contain 2,376,000 gallons of water. Aguada jail has also been housed in Fort Aguada.
